What is the Cumbrian Mart?

It is a free to use classified advertising Website covering Cumbria. You can use it to sell cars, property, furniture, computers, services...

Or you can place wanted ads.

The aim of the Website is "to promote trade, business and charity in Cumbria".

How does it work?

You can enter your own ads, and they will appear instantly on the site. You can place as many ads as you wish. You can delete your own ads.

Start by clicking on the button to place an ad, on the Home page.

To put it simply, you type your own ads.

What information must I provide, before I can place an ad?

• A contact phone number, either a land line, a mobile or both.
• An e-mail address.*
• A region of Cumbria - select from a drop down list where in Cumbria you live.

*Note that you must be very careful to enter your e-mail address correctly - this is because when you submit this information an e-mail is sent to your e-mail address with your password. This password is needed to log-in.

We do not require any personal details - so we don't ask for any.

What is your Privacy Policy?

We only ask for information that is essential for the purpose of placing classified ads. These details are used only for this purpose. We may contact you individually if neccessary. If an account is unused for a significant time then all the details will be deleted. Details will be given to law enforcement agencies, if requested. Details will be given to Internet Service Providers in the case of abusive users.

How safe is it?

Whenever you reveal contact details on the web there is the possibility that anybody in the world can contact you.

Here are a few simple tips:-

• Do not assume that every e-mail you receive in response to an ad is genuine. If it seems unusual - then it is scam. e.g. a request to post your item to Nigeria, there have been some instances of this one. Do not reply, just delete it.
• Remember that a genuine person looking to buy second hand goods in Cumbria almost certainly lives in or near Cumbria.
• There is no assurance that the ads on the site are genuine. We delete ads which we believe to be bogus, but that does not imply that any ads are genuine.

The website is designed to be un-attractive to "spammers" (we never publish lists of e-mail addresses on our site).

How does it make money if it is free?

Is there some sort of invisible way of making money? Do you make money on each transaction? - These are the sort of questions we are often asked. The answer is that there is nothing invisible - classified ads are really free. There is no hidden commission from anybody. The only source of revenue is  the "Banner Ads" on the pages, the picture ads which appear on the side of the screen.

Why don't you charge a small amount? - Lets not be greedy, there are plently of other free classified ads websites around. For us to succeed we need to compete. We are totally free - many of the "free" classifieds sites are only free for certain ads. With the small and widespread population of Cumbria, we believe that this is an appropriate approach.

There is no Spyware in the Cumbrian Mart software - we do not even send cookies.

Who is behind this Website?

We are a family from Wilton near Egremont in West Cumbria. The idea for the site came when we were developing a community website for Haile and Wilton. A classified ads page would not work in the Villages because the target audience was too small. There were no free classified ads websites in Cumbria - so the Cumbrian Mart was born.
